Breath floats as a white cloud in the winter air, the frosty earth crunches underfoot with every step, and inside a hot cocoa is already waiting by the crackling fireplace. Wintertime is outdoor time in the Sauerland, with or without snow. Because even now, in times of Corona, the region has plenty of fascinating natural moments to offer. The perfect recipe against the winter blues!

You can experience the winter Sauerland especially well in the fresh air, for example on foot. Winter hiking is an activity for the whole family. And there are no special requirements: All you should bring is sturdy shoes, warm clothing and, especially if you are traveling with children, enough time. After all, nature is still the most beautiful playground, especially when it is buried under a layer of white powder. In many places, numerous winter wall trails invite you to experience the silent magic of dormant nature step by step. Some are leveled or pushed, on others hikers trudge along snow-covered paths.

Sporty on the road in the Sauerland "ice time".

Year after year, the "ice time" in the Veltins EisArena in Winterberg already starts in October, because as soon as the artificial ice track is iced over, the first bobsleigh, luge and skeleton teams train in the ice tube. And in December at the latest, the time of the European and World Cups arrives, when the top athletes fight for best times in the ice channel. It's an exciting event that spectators won't be able to watch live on site this winter, but they will be able to watch it from the comfort of their own homes via livestream (e.g. via Sportdeutschland.TV).

But the snow-covered landscape itself is always worth a visit or a short trip. Ice crystals coat the trees and shrubs, while thick icicles protrude from the gutters of houses like wintry stalactites. Pristine blankets of snow over the meadows and fields glisten under the wintry sunshine, while you can listen to the trudging sound of feet on the ground. It doesn't take much to find winter bliss in the Sauerland.

Make yourself comfortable!

And even if it doesn't snow, it will be very cozy in the wintry Sauerland and there are countless things to look forward to after the lockdown. After all, the Sauerland's hosts will once again ensure a decidedly cozy winter. Wind and weather stay outside when those seeking relaxation make themselves comfortable in the wellness retreats of the hotels and country inns. Several thermal spas and lovingly designed sauna facilities in the region invite you to relax. Perhaps an enjoyable vacation arrangement is also a nice present under the Christmas tree? Because, as is well known, anticipation is always the best joy. Chocolate dreams during a massage with fragrant cocoa butter, a romantic champagne night or sleeping in a four-poster bed - the hotels, country inns and guesthouses offer suitable packages.
