The unique sandstone, known as Rüthen green sandstone, dominates the townscape and has given the town its special character. Be it the town wall, the medieval Hachtor or the Old Town Hall, the landmarks of the town are as much characterized by this stone as the landscape itself. Important stonemasons have worked the stone, which was therefore an important trade good of the city for centuries and contributed significantly to its former wealth.
These aspects will be emphasized during a general guided tour of the city.
